Personal Data

Personal data refers to any piece of information that can be related to a specific individual. That means that if there is some sort of (combination of) data that is about an identifiable individual, this constitutes personal data. 

The European Commission defines personal data as any information that relates to an identified or identifiable living individual.lxxxi To put it less technically: if you have data that is clearly about a specific person who can be identified, it is personal data. A person is identifiable if they can directly or indirectly be identified through a reference, such as name or some sort of ID. 

Examples of personal data include: 

  •  Name and surname  
  • Home address 
  • An email address like name.surname@company.com 
  • ID card number  
  • Internet protocol (IP) address  
  • Cookie ID
