from | 21 November 2022 | #InsideAT

In our #InsideAT series we regularly present new employees. Today it's Herbert C. Hoffmann's turn. He starts with us as Principal Data & AI Project Lead - in this interview he tells us what drove him to this position, what his background is and how he likes to spend his life outside of work.

What position will you take on at [at]?

I start as Principal Data & AI Project Lead 🤓

How did you find out about [at]?

Because of its good reputation in the community, I had already cast an eye on [at] a while ago. When my former colleague and new Team Lead Ludwig Müller moved to [at], my curiosity was aroused anew 😉 I was very interested in [at].

Why did you choose [at]?

From kununu reviews and personal conversations, I was convinced that [at] fulfilled the points that are very important to me:

  • Good, supportive IT and choice of laptop used
  • An open, friendly working environment with competent and helpful employees
  • Propagated corporate culture is lived
  • A healthy error and feedback culture to make [at] a learning organisation

What are you looking forward to the most?

I am most looking forward to my first projects with exciting clients and to working in a team. I'm also keen to use my skills to support the rapid growth of [at].

What did you do before?

I have only been in the consultancy industry for about half a year. Before that, I worked for companies that produce equipment + software + models for chemical analyses. In the first company as a product manager, then for a longer time as a data scientist with a chemical background. As I am an efficiency freak, my focus was on developing a toolchain to create and analyse the ML models for the analytics devices in a highly automated way.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born and grew up in Dresden. Now I'm happy to be living in Munich again 🙂

What do you do in your spare time?

In my free time I like to be active, do sports, play badminton / squash, go for walks and ride my bike. I also love cooking (mostly vegan, but also Indian), good teas and going out with friends or having game nights with board games or Mario Kart 😀 I'm also very interested in technology, especially hardware, and am currently studying computer science by distance learning.

What has been your favourite travel destination so far and where would you definitely like to go?

In terms of food, Israel was right up my street, but that was a business trip. For eco reasons, I try not to fly, but to travel "closer" by Interrail or long-distance bus. I would definitely like to go to Canada and am still waiting for CO2-free flights or have to plan a little more holiday for the 30-day trip on a transport ship lul 😀

What was your dream job as a child?

Analytical chemist! Even as a toddler, I wanted to know exactly what matter is made of and was able to fulfil this dream. As a data scientist, I was even able to find out how the non-material world is structured - mega cool!

What is your favourite film / series?

My favourite film is "Cloud Atlas", my favourite series are "sense8" (also by the Wachowskis) and "Avatar - Lord of the Elements".

How would you describe yourself in one sentence?

I am an open-minded guy who tries to use his life time for meaningful things and enjoys life at the same time ^_^

What are your three most important work utensils?

My most important work utensils are my grey cells, something for analogue writing and a MacBook.

What was the last book you read?

Shame on me, it was a reference book. I read "The Order of Time" and "The Pragmatic Programmer" in parallel #Nerd alert!

What could you definitely not do without in your travel suitcase?

The things I could least do without are my contact lenses and my phone. Put me out somewhere and I'm guaranteed to get lost without a sat nav 😀

What used to be your favourite subject at school?

I loved mathematics and chemistry <3

What would you get up for in the middle of the night?

I would immediately stand up for any friend who needs support. That's what friends are for 🙂

What do you always carry in your pocket?

I always have chewing gum with me.
