In our #InsideAT series we regularly present new employees. Today it's Ulrich Vornefeld's turn. He starts with us as Executive Venture Partner & VP Product - in this interview he tells us what drove him to join, what his background is and how he likes to spend his life outside of work.
What position will you take on at [at]?
As Executive Venture Partner & Vice President Product, I take responsibility for the Accelerator and the task of further developing and expanding the product area.
How did you find out about [at]?
I first heard about [at] from the Deutsche Bahn environment and then kept reading about [at] in the business press. The Ultimate DATA and AI Guide" has also been on my bookshelf for a while.
Why did you choose [at]?
Data science, AI and ML have fascinated me since I was a student and [at] is one of the leading companies with strong implementation expertise and an incredible range of industry and technology know-how in this field.
In addition, I had the opportunity to talk to many employees before I made my decision, who inspired me with their passion and openness for the corporate culture at [at].
What are you looking forward to the most?
Here's to the shared successes and experiences that help the company to grow and the employees and me to develop further.
What did you do before?
I was previously responsible for building up the data-based business, for the Automotive Solutions Business Unit and for portfolio management of the PARK NOW Group, which was part of the YOUR-NOW Mobility joint venture of Daimler and BMW until the middle of last year. Other stations were BMW Group, Telefónica Digital, Qualcomm and Deutsche Telekom AG. I started my career in consulting at DETECON International GmbH.
Where were you born and raised?
I come from a small village near Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia.
What do you do in your spare time?
I love to cook and go hiking or skiing
What has been your favourite travel destination so far and where would you definitely like to go?
My wife and I did a very impressive trip to the west coast of Canada all the way up to Alaska three years ago and we really want to go to Japan one day.
What is your favourite film / series?
Most recently, I was thrilled by the adaptation of the science fiction novel series "The Expanse" into the TV series of the same name.
How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
"If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room."
What was the last book you read?
I love reading science fiction novels. Amongst the many business books, I have recently picked up Space Partisans by Mark Brandis again - a youth book series from the 70s that transposes contemporary problems such as fascism, racism, the surveillance state, terror, pollution and crimes against humanity into a science fiction setting.
What used to be your favourite subject at school?
My favourite subjects were mathematics, physics and chemistry.
What would you get up for in the middle of the night?
For a perfect soufflé...
