Personal data is any information that can be linked to a specific person. This means that if there is any kind of (combination of) data that relates to an identifiable person, it is personal data. 

The European Commission defines personal data as any information relating to an identified or identifiable living individual. lxxxi6 To put it in less technical terms: If you have data that clearly refers to a specific person who can be identified, it is personal data. A person is identifiable if he or she can be identified directly or indirectly by a reference, such as the name or some kind of identification document. 

Examples of personal data are: 

  • First and last name  
  • Residential address 
  • An email address like Name.Vorname@company.com 
  • Identity card number  
  • IP address  
  • Cookie ID
