Cloud services

The term cloud services is an umbrella term for the services provided to a company and its customers via the internet. With the help of this type of service, one obtains cheap and easy access to applications without having to provide the corresponding hardware or other infrastructure. As a rule, such services are used at work, for example when reading e-mails or working on documents together.

The mode of operation

These services are completely managed by service providers and cloud computing providers. Here, the services are provided on the servers of the providers. For this reason, in-house hosting of the servers is no longer necessary.

The advantages

Lower costs

Since these services are provided in monthly or annual subscritpions, there are no more direct software licences to pay. Therefore, companies no longer need to invest in storage, software or other services, nor do they need to worry about upgrades and maintenance.

High scalability

The provider makes the necessary infrastructure and software available for this purpose. This means that the company no longer has to invest in infrastructure and IT staff to manage it. Likewise, there is a facilitation in scalability (for example, if further licences are required for new employees or the applications need to be expanded).

Increased flexibility

The services can be obtained according to individual needs. If a certain service is no longer needed, this service can be deactivated.

The different two main designs

Software as a Service (SaaS)

This is the best-known service type. These include, for example, the backup and storage of files, tools for project management and web-based e-mail offerings.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

With this service type, the complete infrastructure is provided if the customers do not want to take care of the administration of the tool themselves. In terms of function, it is comparable to the complete framework of a data centre. Here, no local installations are required.
