Internet of Things (IoT)

IoT refers to the concept of an increasing number of (computing) devices being connected to the internet and/or other connected devices. The IoT is thus a giant network of connected devices that are able to exchange data and thereby communicate among themselves.

Given that the IoT has the potential to make human input superfluous in certain processes, it is a cornerstone of automation. Connected devices can be used just about everywhere. By the end of 2018, some 22 billion devices had been connected into the IoT. This number is expected to grow to some 50 billion by 2030.

Some of these devices are only able to collect and transmit data (sensors), some are able to receive data and take an action (actuators) and some are able to do both.
